Gornekk (Sun) Suwattanapong — Portfolio

A builder across disciplines.

Trained to solve problems with equations, but just as likely to solve them with a story.

Give me the problem, not the solution, and I'll design my way to something better than what you asked for.

Engineering

Real projects with real budgets, real clients, and real sign-offs — from oil and gas to medical devices.

Virtual Manufacturing Lab ↗

A gamified browser simulation of manufacturing processes that can't safely run in Imperial's teaching workshops, with a built-in AI tutor that guides with hints rather than answers. Designed, built and shipped solo on a £250 budget. Playable now by clicking above.

Menstrual product testing rig

There's no realistic testing standard for menstrual products, so the team built a two-degree-of-freedom rig that reproduces pelvic motion (walking, jogging, and running) to push for a future British standard. I led the design and mechatronics and ran procurement. It held ±0.5 mm and ±0.5° repeatability over 9-hour runs, came in 38% under budget, and was voted the cohort's most inclusive and innovative project.

Four projects in two months

At Thailand's national oil & gas company: ran the technical bid evaluation for a 15-million-baht chemical-injection skid; led a cross-discipline plant water-readiness study; designed a subsea camera elevation mechanism from concept to sign-off; and built an AI tool that reads piping-class PDFs into a searchable database.

Where engineering meets consulting

Traced a commercial exercise bike's noise complaint to a structural resonance at 200 RPM using impact-hammer modal testing and FFT analysis, and delivered a risk assessment with a costed fix roadmap.

Forming a defect-free EV door

Used finite element analysis in Autoform to model how forming speed and blank-holding force drive localised thinning and wrinkling in a hot-stamped EV aluminium door inner. The model matched physical tests to within 1.3% on thickness. I then tuned the mass-production parameters with Bayesian optimisation to reach defect-free forming, for a projected £10M in savings and an 86% cut in CO2 through the FAST process.

Robots and a night-light

Self-navigating Arduino robots with ultrasonic and line-following sensors, and a Raspberry Pi night-light I built for my visually-impaired grandmother. Building things that actually help someone is what got me into engineering in the first place.

Creative

The storytelling half of the portfolio: a global science-video win, a YouTube channel, theatre, and film.

Space Exploration Champion

At 17 I taught myself the physics, then wrote, filmed, and edited a video called "What Do Black Holes Have to Do With Time Travel?". In January 2022 the Breakthrough Prize Foundation named it the winner of the Space Exploration prize, a special category of the 2021 Breakthrough Junior Challenge.

The prize was a trip to a Rocket Lab launch in New Zealand. COVID meant I never actually got to go, but being recognised for something I'd taught myself, start to finish, still means a lot to me.

คิวปิดพิชิตใจเชฟ — the annual play

Wrote and directed the inter-university play promoting Thai culture in the UK. We planned it as a subsidised event and ended up with a full house and a profit.

Commercial

Where the technical side meets the commercial: a startup I'm building, wealth management, and a startup contest.

NoteFeed

A course-notes platform I'm building solo, start to finish. You learn real courses from a scrolling feed, buy and sell notes, and ask a built-in AI tutor anything. The idea is learning that feels like scrolling. Still in development, with a public demo coming soon.

Best Overall team of 50+ interns

Researched fixed-income and equity securities to build tailored client portfolios. As the only intern without a finance background, I leaned into translating dense analysis into plain, client-ready advice, presenting our findings to mentors and clients every week. My team won Best Overall out of more than fifty interns.

Extracurricular

Leading societies, running events, and doing outreach across continents.

Samaggi Fest

Samaggi Samagom is the Thai Association in the UK, founded in 1901 under royal patronage and now the home for around 10,000 Thai students. I helped organise its events across the year and ran stage and band logistics for Samaggi Fest, a three-headliner concert in London with over 1,000 people.

Six projects, five partner companies

Sourced and ran EWB's pro-bono project programme, pairing student teams with real cleantech companies: machine-learning pipelines for Biofonic's below-ground soil sensors, production scale-up for BioTwin's hemp-based BioStud, biobased-fibre R&D with Tera Mira at Makerversity, a solar-desalination feasibility study with Naked Energy, and retrofit data analytics for UpGreen.
